Conversations with Filmmakers - Bandito Brothers and Shane Hurlbut

FreshDV recently had the chance to meet with a group of Los Angeles-based filmmakers that are at the forefront of the DSLR filmmaking revolution. In collaboration with Bandito Brothers (the creative group behind the amazing doc “Dust to Glory”), seasoned cinematographer Shane Hurlbut has been breaking new ground in DSLR filmmaking for some time now. Bandito is currently in post-production on the Navy Seals feature film that Shane lensed, shot largely on Canon DSLR cameras and due for release in late 2010.

We sat down at Bandito Brothers beautiful Culver City, CA facility to talk about their experience as filmmakers, working with DSLRs, and in particular the work they did on the Navy Seals feature, currently entitled “Act of Valor.”

In these two 20-minute videos, Cinematographer Shane Hurlbut, Bandito’s Jacob Rosenberg, and Hesh Rephun of Raging Artists candidly open up about the filmmaking process. It’s a fascinating and informative discussion, and we hope you enjoy it. Watch below.

FreshDV NAB 2010 - AV3 Get brings audio text search to FCP

Doug Hynes of AV3 Software gave us a demo of Get, their tool for FCP that allows you to search for specific spoken phrases in the audio stream from a video file. It looks like an incredible tool for post-production on documentaries and projects with a large amount of video content. I’d like to see them update it to work with line scripts as well, ala Avid’s Scriptsync. Watch below.

At the Singular Software booth at NAB, Bruce Sharpe gave us a demo of Pluraleyes, the popular HDSLR dual-system audio sync tool. He also talked about their upcoming release of Dualeyes, a standalone tool that allows Other NLE Users to utilize the automatic sync tools Pluraleyes offers. Watch below.

Ikonoskop was in Las Vegas, though not exhibiting at the NAB show. We arranged to meet with them during the week to get a sneak peek at their forthcoming camera system which has been in development for some time now. As you are probably aware, the A-Cam dII will offer a very interesting featureset, with uncompressed recording to a fast proprietary memory cartridge, standard lens mount options, and a unique form-factor that is sure to elicit polarizing opinions from shooters. Cinedeck is a new option coming out soon that offers tethered solid-state recording, with a Cineform codec implementation (among others). It also includes a built-in monitoring solution. Bandpro had a nice set of new fast Leica cine lenses to show off at NAB, they are a pro option that so far seem to be generating great buzz among cine pros. We took a look and got the specs for you. We also checked out the Rotolight at the B&H booth, it’s a unique on-camera LED lighting solution with integrated gel and diffusion system. It comes in at a very affordable price point, and looks like a solid solution for ENG and event work. Check it out below.

Letus was exhibiting at NAB 2010 as well, and they gave us a few minutes of time to show off their sweet new ENG-style quick-release baseplate system, as well as their unique telescoping 15mm rods. iPad Multi-Touch color correction control…this is something we’ve been waiting for since they first announced the iPad. This is a proof of concept application that turns the iPad into a multi-touch interface for Cineform’s First Light application. Here you see it interfacing with the 3 Wheel color correction in Cineform’s First Light, but it also works to help set 3D convergence properties, and much, much more.

Zacuto’s Jens shows us their new baseplate specifically evolved for HDSLR shooting with a quick release built in, the ability to mount two levels of 15mm rods on the front, and even the side. Its a compact unit that can adjust to suit many cameras. Classic Zacuto solution to a common problem.

Jag35 was also exhibiting their gear, compact, affordable solutions for DSLR shooters and also a small entry-level spinning glass 35mm adapter and HD field monitor.

Glue Tools offers a turnkey Final Cut Pro workflow solution for ARRIRAW footage from the ARRI Alexa camera. This is a must watch if you’re curious about how the ARRI Alexa camera can work within your current Final Cut machine. Its exciting to think that this is even a possibility for a small to medium sized production, but Glue Tools again brings the tools.
