B&W Lighting Class – Raiders of the Lost Ark

Evan Richards has a post over at his blog about the cinematography of Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark. He talks about how Steven Soderbergh chose to study that film in black & white, as a lighting exercise. There are a whole slew of black and white frames from Raiders in Evan’s post, head on over there and check it out.
Other great posts to check out on Evan’s blog are the lighting style of Immortals, and the cinematography of Ben Hur. The lighting in Ben Hur is flatter (and slightly dated in my opinion), but the framing choices are really interesting…each frame has an epic feel, and the eye is drawn very clearly to the frame’s focal point. Great work to study.
