Several months ago, Christ in Youth brought me on as Director of Photography for a promo film project. CIY projects are always a pleasure to work on, because they understand the value of well-produced content that tells a clear message with compelling visuals. We shot this promo on the Sony FS100 using my Zeiss Contax lens set, and I’m very pleased with how it turned out overall.

Some of the challenges that we faced on this shoot were quite a bit of greenscreen and tracking work (the FS100 performed beautifully), potential brick wall moire concerns, shutter sync issues with the 16mm film projector prop, and a shoot day that nearly went overtime due to location audio noise.

You can watch the finished promo below, and I’ve written a very long, detailed article on the technical and creative challenges of the shoot over at my ClearCreek Productions filmmaking website.

    Hey, great work! A couple questions;

    1. How long did it take you guys to shoot this and how many were on your crew?

    2. What camera do you think is better? Sony F3 or the FS100? I’m contemplating on which one to get

    Crew included a Director, DP, Gaffer, Grip, Soundie, and AC/PA. A couple of our talent also pitched in to help with big setups.

    Which camera is better for what purpose? The answer varies from person to person, and what you need it to do for you. For me, the FS100 is like a DSLR without the limitations. No moire, pro audio, monitoring/histogram/zebras, clean output, etc. I think that it accomplishes much of the same look and performance as the F3, at a fraction of the price. That said, there’s a lot to like about the F3, and for the right level work I shoot with it also.

    I’m an amateur filmmaker who is just starting out. My focus will be PRIMARILY narrative films(shorts & features) however I also will shoot music videos, documentaries, and promos such as this. I like the style in the promo you did thts similar to my style that I want to achieve. I already have a Canon7D I’m just trying to expand to another camera soon so that I can be more versatile
