Published by Matthew Jeppsen October 21st, 2009 in News
Kenn Bell has launched a new podcast called MacMediaTech, and the premiere episode features a discussion between filmmakers Paul Zadie, Paul Del Vecchio, and myself. We talk for over an hour about gear, gear-fixation, general filmmaking, and of course, Macs. I think you’ll find it an interesting and relevant discussion, and hope you give this podcast a shot. Listen to your Ep 2 talking about RED workflow
We have 2 REDRocket cards.
My understanding is that Log & Transfer (LAT) bakes the .R3D into ProRez, that normally takes around 9 times RT without the RR cards. All the RR cards do at the moment is speed up that process to RT. I am unaware of any native support from Apple for .R3D at this time. There is away back to COLOR and the .R3D but its through XML and COLOR presently only runs at 1K, when you stop on a frame it displays 2K or 4K.
The final way we want this to work is that FCP editing controls a Debayered on the fly output from RR to a 4K screen and then “Round Robins” back to COLOR where those same files can be graded. If I have missed something here, that does not happen at the moment and may never happen with APPLE. COLOR is a heavily based GPU Application and would have to be completely rewritten and thats unlikely. The RED workflow is still very complicated, we deal with it every day.
