Am I the only one who thought this footage was disappointing? I saw better super 8 footage before with much less grain….
Great idea Art?.
Well, Cordvision, you are seeing it at high definition, A lot of other Super8 stuff will have been reduced to SD or even lower web resolution which will disguise the grain, plus this is also cropped for 16:9, when the natural resolution of super 8 is 4:3. There are some wider custom super 8 cams but they’re still only about 1.6:1 rather that 1.78:1.
Plus a lot of super 8 transfers won’t be particularly sharp, which will reduce the apparent graininess. The transfer is really sharp, grain and all. Also this is pretty high end filmmaking. If you’re going to WETA digital to do your transfers to 2K, it’s not like money is any object. You’re not choosing super8 for budgetary reasons. You;’d probably WANT that grain.
Having said that, the stuff this guy’s doing in his garage looks pretty impressive to me!
