Red updates with new specs, renders, delivery timeline
Published by Matthew Jeppsen December 4th, 2008 in NewsThe latest announcement from Red updates the specs on models announced in their mid-November announcement. Mike Curtis has a good writeup that talks about the new options. Red clearly has a vision for high-end filmmakers, but last April’s Scarlet camera announcement has been consistently discussed by independent filmmakers. Here’s a few details on the latest changes to the announced Scarlet line:
Scarlet 2/3″ sensor “8x Fixed” (8x zoom lens, T/2.4)
* $3000 for brain and lens, $3750 for “complete kit” including “power, finder and media module”
* 3K 1-120fps w/ 150fps burst. 1080P 1-30fps.
* Redcode 42
* Fall 2009 projected ship dateScarlet 2/3″ sensor “Cinema” (PL, RED, mini-RED, C, B4, Nikon, or Canon lens mount)
* $2500 (brain, no lens mount)
* 3K 1-120fps w/ 150fps burst. 1080P 1-30fps.
* Redcode 42
* Summer/Fall 2009 projected ship dateScarlet S35 sensor “DSMC” (PL, RED, mini-RED, C, B4, Nikon, or Canon lens mount)
* $7000 (brain, no lens mount)
* 5K 1-30fps w/ 72fps burst. 4K 1-30fps. “QuadHD” 1-30fps. 2K 1-72fps. 1080P 1-30fps.
* Redcode 80
* Summer 2009 projected ship dateScarlet FF35 sensor “DSMC” (PL, RED, mini-RED, C, B4, Nikon, or Canon lens mount)
* $9750 (brain, no lens mount)
* 6K 1-30fps w/ 72fps burst. 4K 1-30fps. “QuadHD” 1-30fps. 2K 1-72fps. 1080P 1-30fps.
* Redcode 100
* Winter 2009 projected ship date
Note: It is my understanding that Jim has indicated that Nikon and Canon mounts will mate with the 2/3 Scarlet, however expect a 3.93x crop factor/magnification due to the sensor size.
On the topic of ship dates being pushed back (in most cases), Jim Jannard states:
“We have been known for being “fashionably late”. We are frankly still very new at building cameras. While we seem to have a much better understanding of what it is we are doing… there is still room for us to miscalculate. On top of that, many technological advances are occurring during the development process. We are implementing as many “changes for the better” as we can even though we are near the end of this system’s development. The incredible new specs we are announcing today does come with a justifiably slight schedule hit. Certainly worth a few extra weeks in our opinion. Hence, “Prices, specifications and delivery dates are subject to drastic changes”. Count on it and you won’t be disappointed.”

Well, at least the 2.8 is a 2.4:

there is no nikon or canon mount for the 2/3 scarlet
Kapoue, Jim has stated on the Reduser forum that Nikon and Canon mounts are an option for the 2/3 Scarlet, but due to sensor size you’ll experience a crop factor which multiplies the focal length by nearly 4x.
I’ve updated this post with that info, as well as the other supported lens mounts for Scarlet.
