I’ve been following a months-long series of articles by The Inquirer on faulty Nvidia chipsets. Previously, the investigation pointed a wary finger at a specific GPU line from the graphics card manufacturer, but never really nailed down affected models. It seems that now there is reasonable cause to believe that the GPUs supplied for the current 15″ Macbook Pro model may contain a manufacturing flaw that will cause them to fail under high heat conditions. The Inquirer went so far as to rip open a new Apple notebook, dissect the internals and encase them in lucite, and run them through a scanning electron microscope with an X-ray microanalysis system. Sounds like a typical FreshDV test… The results from the lab contradict what Nvidia has been suggesting through it’s PR channels, and show rather definitively that this particular notebook model has the ‘bad bumps’ of solder that indicate a GPU produced with faulty manufacturing processes. In other words, a GPU that is more than likely destined to fail. For now, users are being told to avoid the current 15″ Macbook Pro model.
