Via Discrete Cosine here’s a link to DVinfo where an Australia-based user has created a better do-it-yourself SD card interface media solution for the Sony XDCAM PMW-EX1 and PMW-EX3 camcorders. He’s calling it the MxR Expresscard Adapter and you can buy one for $35 (+ $10 postage US, $12 for Europe). The adapter accepts a standard SDHC card, and the whole array then slips into the EX-series card slots. The camera’s card slot door can close with this design, which was a common criticism of the previous DIY “KxS” option. It won’t overcrank, as the limitation appears to be 48fps. However, for all lower framerates, this solution seems like a no-brainer for EX shooters.

Buy one of these, slap in an approved SD card like the $65 Sandisk 16GB Ultra 2 memory card (or the Extreme III series), and you are good to go.

For a little comparison shopping, Sony’s 16GB SxS card is currently priced at $744. A 32GB SxS card will currently set you back $1425 USD. The MxR reader and a 16GB card can be had for $110. Not bad. You can purchase the MxR adapter online at e-films.com.au.
