Via Filmlinker and Prolost comes this video tutorial on how to achieve crane-like short dolly movements with nothing other than a tripod. Very creative use of a tool that nearly everyone has already, and convincing when executed with care (and with a nice wide-angle lens).

Hey I inveted that trick two years ago!!! No seriously, But it’s a lot harder with a full size camera. Also it works better with a zoom controller.
This is a good move. Make sure the two legs in the ground are solidly planted or it could spell trouble ;)
It’s funny, just when you think you’ve done everything you can with a tripod…this video surfaces. I can’t believe I haven’t thought of this already. It works surprisingly well, doesn’t it…

Truly impressed! Can’t wait go get back home to try this out!
Awesome! Can’t wait to try this one. Actually, I can’t wait to raise the center column on one of my tripods, reverse the tripod legs from this video, and maybe see how crane-esque this can become with the appearance of gaining height instead of lowering. Is that right?
