With Sony’s introduction of two new SxS camcorders in recent months, solid-state media is obviously a big topic for NAB. Indeed it was a theme we saw throughout the show…whether it’s P2, SxS, or CF, it is clear that flash-based media is here to stay. This video segment is a behind the scenes look at the robust nature of Sony’s SxS media. FreshDV spoke with shooter Alister Chapman about his experiences with the tapeless media in the Arctic. I have been enjoying the trade show videos from NAB. I too have shot my fair share of trade show video, mainly Interbike in Vegas, and have a couple of tips for the folks shooting on the floor:

    1. Try shooting progressive if at all possible. The horizontal interlace lines are bothersome to view online. 30P is my suggestion - and it looks a little more professional.

    2. Use the zoom ring to crop in on the subject instead of zooming. A mentor of mine once told me not to zoom. His reasoning was that the human eye does not zoom, so it is an unnatural effect. Move the camera closer, or use the zoom ring to get in closer.

    3. If you are doing a talking head style interview, make sure to zoom in tight on the subject, focus, and then pull back out prior to recording. leave the camera in manual focus, and you should be sharp throughout the entire shot. I saw a couple of drifts in the focus during this segment as the camera tried to focus on the background when you went in tight.
