Kenn Bell has a post up that talks about how he used the iPhone to storyboard a recent music video shoot. His technique is quick and looks to be very effective…take digital images while location scouting, throw together a quick iMovie video slideshow, and use the video on-set with the iPhone.

“Basically, we’d arrive at a location, I’d play the movie and let everyone, including Baby Jay, see what shots and looks I was interested in. It only took a minute and everyone was on the same page. I can’t stress enough how much time I saved! The three days went incredibly smooth and I really believe it was because the movie on my iPhone. It actually got everyone excited to see how cool the music video would look and I gained a great deal of trust from it.”

This would also be a good time to check out Kenn’s interview on the Digital Production Buzz podcast.

I’m… unimpressed. Anything that can capture images can pretty much do the same job. I’ve been doing this for years using either a small dv camcorder, a cellphone or a digital camera. Playback used to be in jpeg or Divx on my HP iPAQ PocketPC (yeah, these PC compatible products DO work !).

I guess some people will do anything to promote Apple products…

Jay, I’m ecstatic for you that you’ve been doing this sort of thing for years. You should write a tutorial (like this one) the next time you innovate like that, so others can follow in your highly-capable footsteps.

Sure, other products can accomplish the same thing. But I would argue that a greater number of DP’s and indies are walking around with iPhones than with iPaqs. Furthermore, part of the simplicity of this workflow is the fact that a slideshow can be generated with minimum effort and quickly synced to the device. That’s not to say you cannot do the same thing on a PC or any other platform for that matter…this is simply a quick method of accomplishing this on a popular platform.

I guess some people will do anything to disparage Apple products… ;-)

I agree with you Matt. I think the idea Kenn Bell was trying to get across was that the iPhone minimizes time, equipment, and stress when trying to “storyboard,” especially because of the popularity the iPhone has with Mac users.

On another note, it’s amazingly convenient to be able to use the same lens on a DSLR that you will be using on the HVX with Letus, Mac or PC user!

Everyone has their own way of doing things…this was just another suggestion….and, as an avid Apple fan, an excellent suggestion at that.

    :-)
