Apogee Duet Audio InterfaceApogee has a really interesting product called Duet that offers a hardware device and software integration in Logic Pro, Soundtrack Pro, and Garageband. It also includes a Maestro application that enables you to use Duet with any Core Audio-compatible application. The firewire-powered hardware interface includes I/O level meters, multiple inputs and outputs via the included breakout cable, and a multi-function controller dial. It looks like a good solution for the video or audio editor that doesn’t need a full control board but could use a few more analog I/O options along with “real” external control. It also offers more tools to MacBook editors that don’t have the option to addon a sound card. I personally am looking for such a solution, this may well be the answer for me. You can find more specs and details at the Apogee site, and B&H has the device listed at $495.

Looks good but I’ve recently been looking at the Tascam FireOne (http://www.tascam.com/details;8,14,104.html) which I still think may be a better choice - similar specs but no breakout cable required, and it’s got dedicated transport controls & 8 programmable function buttons. It’s like a ShuttlePro and an audio interface in one… I haven’t tried it yet but I’ll likely pick one up soon.

Almost forgot, the FireOne is significantly cheaper - currently $229 at B&H (a drop from it’s previous $299 price a few months ago). It also acts a midi interface and controller, so it seems to be a much better package overall than the apogee.

Yes but that FireIne is 3 times the size, nowhere near as portable as the Duet.

True, I didn’t realize how small the Duet is. I guess it’s a question of priority - functionality & price vs. size. I still think I’ll go with the FireOne - it’s smaller than my macbook and significantly smaller than my macbook pro and would still fit easily in my bag with either one.

Another option is the AlphaTrack from Frontier Design…it’s under $200 at B&H (though currently out of stock). Has a motorized fader that you can use to ride levels in FCP. Sweetness…
