"Are we saying here that it doesn’t matter how film competitions are funded and it’s a good thing that we are encouraging creativity no matter what?"
I do think that creativity SHOULD be encouraged. Clearly there are ethical concerns associated to where funding can come from, and that I believe is largely a personal decision. We all have our own ethical limits beyond those of the law.

You appear to have a personal issue with participating in a contest funded by and created for Christians (that's a pretty broad definition, by the way). So be it. You are also welcome to denigrate and denounce Christians and religion in general if you wish. That is certainly your right and I encourage you to exercise it. But this site is not the place. As Kendal stated, you are welcome to continue any religion debates offline, or on any one of the THOUSANDS of message boards and sites dedicated to that area of debate. I can recommend a few if you wish. This discussion should stay focused on filmmaking.

"Would one enter a creative contest funded by the Mafia?"
I see your Straw Man and I raise you a False Dichotomy... ;-) You've strayed from a belief system like religion to straight-up illegal funding. I am confident that the funding for THIS particular contest has been raised legally. I personally know the people that have set it up and are working tirelessly to encourage a small but dedicated group of filmmakers. I support that. FreshDV supports that. I'm sorry if you have an issue with it.

Okay Guys,
Listen up and play nice here. I'm a believer and a filmmaker BUT the goal of this post is related to the discussion of filmmaking and not the discussion of religion. Now this conversation can be continued through emails if you like but lets keep the discussion here civil and relevant to the topic of filmmaking guys. I'm more then open to continuing this discussion by email at Kendal@freshDV.com.

What in the world?! It's just a contest put on by a group of Christian filmmakers! Lighten up! There is a new movement going on among Christians. It's called Christian filmmaking and this contest is a part of it. You can find more info about this movement at: http://www.independentchristianfilms.com/

Hang on there just a second...I have seen countless secular AD agencies etc..in the last few years going the viral video route by charging clients high dollars to develop the campaign and then running "Contest" for filmmakers to do all the labor for free, often times just for the shot at seeing a spot get aired nationally. How is a website for filmmakers sponsored by a worldview or belief system a con?? I don't agree with ALOT of things the Church does but challenging people to get involved in learning to communicate in todays culture and media can be good, and far from a con. There are COUNTLESS business practices of many other "contest" and "awards" programs that are far more of a "con" than this. Just because its sponsored by a Christian group all of a sudden thats a con?

"This makes me sick! - The Church just knows how to con people! "

The "Church" is not putting this website or contest on. But yeah, ditto to what Matt said. I hope to submit something and have a chance at the $500.00. I need some more equipment that the $500 could buy.

Well I suppose there's nothing keeping you from entering the contest and "conning them back." :-)
Regardless of religious beliefs you can always fulfill the first two goals of the contest, namely: (1) have fun, (2) get to know who is good at making Web videos
