UK DP Philip Bloom took his new XDCAM EX1 on a test shoot with the Letus Extreme 35mm adapter. He’s shared his thoughts on the combo and a short video clip as well. The footage looks amazing…
“The first three shots are adaptor free and there is one shot near the end that comes after a similar shot that is also adaptor free. Initially I was going to shoot loads on non letus stuff but once I had it on I didn’t want to take it off. All I can say is the camera shoot cracking pictures with or without the Letus that blow the HVX 200 clean out of the water!”UPDATE: Philip Bloom’s site is currently offline due to excessive traffic as people download the short, so we are mirroring the clip here (with his permission).

Wow. That’s some great looking footage. I love my HVX200, but those images do make one a little jealous.
Can’t wait to see what FreshDV shoots with one of these cameras.
I don’t have an HVX200 so my basis for comparison is just what I’ve seen on a friend’s camera and online. This footage does look excellent, but it’s not straight out of the camera. It’s ex1, letus flip, a 35mm lens and some magic bullet filters. I recall seeing similar HVX200 footage given a similar combination.
Can anyone articulate specifically where you see the differences?
thanks.
I’m looking for a bit more clarification. Does the 35mm adapter only provide better depth of field than the XDCAM provide, or are there other benefits?
The 35mm lens adapter permits the use of 35mm cinematic lenses and all the benefits that come with that. A big part of it is the “look” (depth of field, etc.) but also physical control… for example the ability to attach a follow focus device.
You can read up a bit on Red Rock’s site…

Now Philip Bloom and his camera are so popular, DotMac reports that the data transfer limit for his site has been exceeded due to high traffic. I am looking forward to seeing Piccadilly Furs once Mr. Bloom pays more to Apple Inc. and his site comes up again.
Ahh, a shame he’s exceeded bandwidth. It’s a beautiful clip that really shows off what you can do with the tools. Philip also has a great eye for composition. Hopefully it will be back up soon.

Moni, one key difference that sticks out to me immediately is native resolution/sharpness. It appears that the EX1 is tack sharp, even with a 35mm adapter attached. And I’m not talking about Sony’s typical harsh edge enhancement here, it looks like the camera is natively around the resolution of the F900 (to my eye). I’d be willing to bet that the HVX in the same setup would be noticeable softer. Not that softer is necessarily a bad thing for certain applications. But a key difference nonetheless.

Hello Jeppson,
The site is still down. Can you get in touch with Mr. Bloom and get the footage and his thoughts on this site.
Thanks,
Pankaj,
India.
Pankaj,
Bloom’s site will be offline for a few more days it seems, you can download the footage from our FreshDV mirror above. Or here: http://www.freshdv.com/podpress_trac/web/1646/0/ex1_letus_720p.mp4

Hi guys,
I had the maximum bandwith allowed on dot mac and it was still exceeded so I have moved to another server. It shouldn’t go down again.
There are two more shorts with the EX1 and Letus Extreme on my site now. I will also do some filming soon with the Brevis flip and EX1
Best,
Philip
Philip, thanks for the update and footage. Grabbing the new vids now!
You can also catch mirrors of Phil’s work here in both a FLV “quick load” version and the full res MP4s.
