Specialized Multi-Touch Interfaces Mature

Well it’s time for another Jeff Han Multi Touch Update. Embedded below is the latest interview and video demostration. I can’t wait until we can get multitouch in the edit room!

At first I thought that was the greatest thing ever (for editing). But then I remember something I read by an old time editor who was thinking that there is a lot of validity to having to sit and wait for technology. This guy told the story of how they would have to wait for reels to rewind/fast forward (this is on KEM, Steenbeck, Moviola) and while waiting he would think about the cut/film. The faster we can do something the less we have to think about it. Editing begins in your head and ends in your hands. Would this be better?
That’s a great point, Scott. I’m sure that Walter Murch would agree…if I remember correctly he uses index cards to work out his scene flow on a corkboard before he edits with the NLE.
I do believe that multi-touch would simply be another great tool in the editor’s kit. In particular it could make complex keyframing and motion/tracking work a whole lot more interactive and simpler to accomplish. However, I don’t see a multi-touch interface completely replacing the way NLE’s operate. Keyboards and shortcuts are simply far too fast for quick cutting. I see the tech as more of an extension of the toolkit we already use.
