One digital cinema camera that hasn’t got a lot of attention is the noX by GS Vitec. They recently announced they would be attending the IBC tradeshow, and that they had met their target release date of September 7th. The 2K camera system can be ordered at this time, with a delivery date in approx 5-8 weeks. Some of the camera specs are intriguing, like the listed 12+ full stops of dynamic range. I’d be interesting in seeing a stouffer wedge shot by this camera. It appears to be an IT-based design similar to the SI-2K, with features like Gig-Ethernet access of files and programmable under-cranking. Interesting stuff. Specs follow…
*2K resolution (2048 x 1152 at 25-fps max)
*1080p (1920 x 1080, progressive, 23.98-, 24-, 25-fps)
*720p (23.98-, 24-, 25-, 29.97-, 37-fps max)
*Single 1.2“ CCD chip
*More than 12 f-stops dynamic range

12 Stops of dynamic range (4000:1) is a lot to stuff into 8bits of data, please excuse my scepticism, but seems highly unlikely and not have banding issues.
Quoted from the GS Vitec web site…
“What is the typical data rate of recording in 1080/24P?
The data rate of the uncompressed RAW stream from the camera in 8-bit, 1080/24-fps format is 380Mb/s.”
chalk me up for skeptical as well… :)
Hi there
Understanding that in this times it’s hard to believe in the marketing oriented claims of new camera manufacturers :-P , we’ve got footage here that contains this nr. of F-Stops AND masses of details in the Highlights and Lowlights, in 8 bit, Because we’ve heard this kind of disbelief more than once now, this footage will get online in the next days to stop speculation. You’ll find a link here too. Anyway, 8 bit is what the prototype ran on, the final version which will be delivered in some weeks is 12 bit lin / log - your choice and 14 bit will come as a software update which is in the making right now. Writing down only the things you’ve really got is a matter of a good business conduct.
Thank you very much for your valued opinion.
