FreshDV RSS and Podcast Feed Updates
Published by Matthew Jeppsen August 18th, 2007 in FreshDV, News
Due to feedback from the FreshDV faithful over the past few months, we have been making gradual improvements to our RSS feed and audio/video podcast feed. There have been enough changes to warrant an update post, so I’ll try to cover all the improvements here.
*Our RSS news feed now includes the full text of articles and posts so you can view it in your newsreader of choice. The address is: http://feeds.feedburner.com/freshdv
*You can subscribe to our RSS news feed via e-mail to be notified of new posts and updates. Do that here.
*You can still automagically subscribe to our audio/video podcasts in iTunes (and your iPod if so equipped). Clicky clicky.
*There is now a audio/video podcast feed created specifically for third party podcast tools and software like Miro. Use this address: http://feeds.feedburner.com/freshdv/podcast
As always, “subscribing” to any of our feeds won’t cost you a dime. If you are unsure how to use feeds and podcasts, here is a quick primer that may be helpful. Thanks for reading, watching, and listening. Your comments and feedback are greatly appreciated.

Fresh Links

The feedburner rss feed has no links in the text. So if you wanted to click on something, you have to click to come here before going to the eventual location. Of course, that is not the best for your subscribers.
well at this point we are still attempting to find the balance between informing readers and we can’t shoot ourselves in the foot and lose all our traffic to the site or that becomes an issue for us, so we are still trying to figure out the best compromise on some of those issues and how to make that all work. Ideas and feedback are appreciated.
Most people don’t use readers. The people that do are most likely bloggers or web savvy people. They are most likely able to link to you, to promote you. They are not going to click on ads or other things unless they really want to, they are not the kind of readership that ads on a site will attract.
Also, feedburner and other services offer advertising in feeds. So in a sense you don’t lose any advertising dollars. In many ways, these are more profitable because you know the readers that see this ad belong to a very specialized tech crowd.
But the biggest thing is that it is a complete pain in the ass to read your feed and not be able to click the link you are talking about. Sometimes I am not even sure there is a link there. Kinda confusing.
I disagree with your suggestion that most people don’t use readers. While that may be the case among general web users, I think that the savvy crowd you mention truly describes a large percentage of FreshDV readers. And consider too that RSS and ATOM feeds are becoming nearly ubiquitous online, those users not utilizing feed readers now may very well be using them in the near future.
I do agree that the lack of feed links coupled with the style in which we sprinkle links throughout articles makes it difficult to determine if/when there is something to clicky-clicky. As such, we’re looking into adding links back into the feed. Depending on traffic patterns they may even stay there. We are definitely open to the idea of testing it however. Look for updates in the future on this.
Many thanks for your feedback, we very much appreciate your concerns.
