One Response to “P2 Viewer Comes to MAC OS X”

I’ve been working with the P2CMS software on and off for the past couple of days over this 3 day (Labor Day) weekend. I’ve got to say that the potential is great using the MXF tags and descriptors to log footage. BUT as a new user to the MXF file format and its feature rich possibilities I’ve found a few frustrations.

    1) The number one irritation is Panasonic’s translated version of the P2CMS pdf manual to English. Too often it is vague or simply unclear. Also at least one feature (attaching files to a clip - see p. 52 of the document) is not functioning in the 1.0.0 version of the software I downloaded to my MacBook Pro.

    2) The manual assumes the user has a larger knowledge base than I have. The software has features, but there is no explanation as to why those features might be helpful, useful, needed or desired. Again, the translation gets in the way, but even if the English were perfect, there is much to be desired in the detail offered in the manual. (Do I need to Export the footage to use it in FCS 2.0? When I imported - I think that’s what I did - the standard, NTSC DV footage MXF file from my HDD into FCS, the footage played back at about 1.5X normal, and it did not appear to be full DV quality.)

    3) There is no explanation as to how I should want to organize my database(s). How one should keep track of media. Why MXF files don’t simply open in FCS ready for use.

I understand that my ignorance is lending to some of my frustration, but this IS Panasonic’s P2 product, seems that they’d want to give the customer as much as possible (education and advice) when dealing with the metadata.

Can anyone suggest a metadata primer? Would you recommend “Descriptive Metadata for Television” by Cox, Mulder, and Tadic?

FWIW: I am using the HVX200 with a 16GB card. And the footage with which I am experimenting is from a HS football game. I also have an FS-100 that is tethered to the camera for longer recordings.
