The lovely and talented Wendy Gribble (Graeme’s better half) has shared an informative tutorial on Apple Color over at Ken Stone’s site. The article talks walks you through creating node trees and dealing with interlaced sources. She also shares a quick example of the G Smart Denoise plugin, part of the Nattress Advanced Plugins for Color package. And while you are over at the Nattress site, snag the free G Blend blending mode plugin for Color.

Great tutorial! Thanks for posting, I certainly learned a nifty trick. I hate to nitpick, but I’m pretty sure the line about color only accepting one video layer is wrong, no? I’ve been roundtripping up to five layers with no obvious problems, although there is a point where it just doesn’t work between five and seven. I’m almost nervous to speak up on this; is there something I’m missing?

The article I wrote is wrong about Color only accepting one layer. Color will handle multiple layers, especially for composites. The Setup Guide recommends that all consecutive shots be all on V1. This is for ease of navigation and not because Color can’t handle the multiple layers. Color does have some limits in handling graphics/stills, titles, and filters, so I have gotten into the habit of mixing down to one track. But you are correct, Color can certainly handle multiple layers. It is something I need to explore a little more. Thanks for bringing this up.
