As someone who reads many many feed syndicated sites daily, I appreciate your complaint, Chris. In a perfect world, we could put everything unrestricted in the feed. Unfortunately, not everyone on the internet is a good netizen.
There are a growing number of aggregation blogs and sites that offer no original content, they simply rip content from other sites through the simplicity of RSS feeds. This is extremely unfortunate, and completely unfair to the content creators (that’d be us). It’s also unfair to our advertisers and those who provide us with the means to make all of this content possible.
We work hard to create fresh, compelling, and informative original content here at FreshDV. The decision to use summarized RSS feeds was made in an effort to limit the damage these unethical sites can do to devalue our content. It also means that we don’t have to embed ads in the feed, or resort to other means (like subscriptions).
It’s always a balance with these things, but we feel that the summarized feeds conveniently keep you informed without having to manually visit the site. If you see something that catches your eye, you click through. It’s not a perfect methodology, but we feel it’s a good balance between controlling our creative work and making it accessible.
I appreciate you taking the time to make your voice heard…know that we take readers feedback very seriously. I welcome further discussion on this issue.
-Matt Jeppsen
You make good points, Chris. Darren Rowse has taken on the issue of full vs. partial several times as well, and cited higher reader satisfaction after making the switch to full text feeds. He’s also cited lower traffic numbers and reduced comments on the site. Now onto a related issue…I’m curious what your take is on feed advertising?
-MJ
I have to admit that till the NAB podcasts, I kinda resisted checking your feed on Google reader because of the partial feeds.
Feed advertising is very very acceptable. I hope you change your feed setup.
Ok guys thanks for the feedback we are discussing this now to see what we kind of compromise we can reach. We’ll be in touch thanks again.
