DRM Its In The Hands of The People

Okay just my feelings on a very controversial issue. Early this morning in London EMI announced that they would be officially removing all DRM from their complete iTunes catalogue.

“On iTunes EMI tracks free of digital rights management (DRM) software with twice the audio quality will cost $1.29 (99p). Itunes users will be able to upgrade previously purchased EMI songs and albums for 30 cents (20p) a track.
Apple will continue to sell DRM-protected versions of music tracks, including those from EMI, for 99 cents (79p).
All EMI albums will now be free of DRM and at the higher quality with no increase in price.

Mr Nicoli said the move did not diminish EMI’s fight against piracy. DRM has been hailed by some in the industry as the most effective way to stop illicit copying.
“We have to trust our consumers,” he said. “We have always argued that the best way to combat illegal traffic is to make legal content available at decent value and convenient.”

So we now have a major record company that has heard the cries of the public and decided to take the gamble. I see this as a huge stepping point forward in how online content will be provided. Who will determine the outcome? We as users will. If we take advantage of this and exploit it illegally large companies will say see it doesn’t work people only care about what they can get for free. Good music will only become more expensive and harder to get legitimately. My suggestion is this if you are one of the people who has been calling for the removal of DRM then rejoice!! However realize that at this point in time this is a giant expirament, lets proove what we have been asking for and not abuse what we have been given, in the hopes that other companies will follow suite and in the long run creative content as a whole can be distributed DRM free in a manner that will still be profitable to produce and allow even better content to be created. Th choice is yours and what you do with it could easily shape where the music industry and eventually the movie industry are headed. So its up to you.
