Red Update - Feature limitations on first 100 shipped
Published by Matthew Jeppsen March 1st, 2007 in Cameras, Hardware, News, Production, SoftwareJim Jannard and Co. announced a major update on happenings in the Red Digital Cinema front. Lots of info shared, reservation holders and those interested in Red alike will probably want to read this (most already have, is my guess). One of the major announcements is that the first 100 cameras to ship will not have the entire featureset available, and will require a software update to enable them at a later date. I understand this is an effort to get the first 100 units out in the field faster, and I frankly don’t think those reservation-holders will be complaining. The software holdup seems to be limited to RGB-related features. Jim says “…I expect about 85% of all features to come with Serial #1-100…All the important features (including 4k REDCODE RAW) will be enabled from the beginning. The camera will be useable from day one.”
I’ll not further summarize here, as Mike Curtis has already done a far better job and included some predictions and commentary to boot. Well worth reading, as is always the case with HD For Indies content. Drop a nickel in Mike’s bucket while you are over there.
