Apple slips info on forthcoming Octo-Macs?
Published by Matthew Jeppsen March 14th, 2007 in Hardware, News, Shopping
The Unofficial Apple Weblog has a supposed screenshot from the UK Apple Store that shows both four and eight core options for Mac Pros. The “error” was soon corrected. Whether the information was “accidentally” released or not, it’s just another indicator that Apple will be releasing octo-Macs in the near future. The Intel quad-core processors have been out for a while now, so it’s only a matter of time. As Camcorderinfo speculates, maybe before NAB?

Gotcha! Bear in mind though that those quad-core chips are pretty old now. In Q3, Intel pricing will be as follows:
QX6800 2.93 GHz 8MB 1066 MHz $999
Q6700 2.66 GHz 8MB 1066 MHz $530
Q6600 2.40 GHz 8MB 1066 MHz $266
Hmm, the FresHDV comment machine ate half my comment… here’s the rest:
$266 is damn cheap - you’d be crazy to get one now. It’s probably a bit more for the Xeon version (so you can run 2 at once) but not much more. And then there’s the move to 45nm coming before the end of the year. And the new architecture next year…
If Octo-macs had come out in Dec 2006 or so (along with their PC counterparts) it would have been great (well, assuming you had software that properly used 8 cores, like Mental Ray, Cinema 4D, etc). At this point, the “new” chips are soon going to be obsolete!
Personally I’m going to wait… by next year the cores should be much faster still, the Mac GPU situation might suck less and you might actually have editing / compositing software that’s optimized for 8 cores 2 GPUs.

Bruce, do you ever rest? Great input, much appreciated.
