Music wants to be free…and we all want a pony. Just a few days ago, Steve Jobs shared a few thoughts on music and DRM. His comments have fueled a maelstrom of responses from the likes of Mike Curtis, DVD Jon, John Gruber, and The Economist to name a few…it seems that everyone has a take on the issue. And some very insightful commentary at that. Read on for a few fresh links and commentary…

Mike Curtis @ HD For Indies practically wrote a book on the topic, taking time to thoroughly go through each of the major points. You’ll need your reading glasses for this one.

Jon Lech Johansen chimed in with no less than three responses to the open letter from Jobs, stating Actions speak louder than words, Steve is using misleading statistics, and countering Steve’s resistance to licensing FairPlay.

John Gruber of Daring Fireball read between the lines, providing his translation of the commentary. Insightful stuff.

The Economist has also weighed in with an editorial on the issue, stating in part “Selling digital music without copy-protection makes sense.”

And finally, there is a very interesting article over at Newsvine that tries to answer the question “Has Steve Jobs refused to lift Fairplay protections when given the chance?
