Canon HV20 Review
Published by Matthew Jeppsen February 8th, 2007 in Cameras, News, Reviews, ShoppingUPDATE: The HV20 is available for $999 from B&H and $1099 from Amazon.com
DCN located a review of the new Canon HV20, which is coming stateside sometime before summer. One thing that has suprised me is that it’s supposedly a 3 lux camera.
Along the same lines, DV.com has a review comparing the Sony HC3 to the Canon HV10 for use as a backup camera solution (also via DCN)

It’s a 3 lux camera because it has improved digital noise reduction, not a major sensor improvment. That’s not going to stop me wanting one, though!
I received my HV20 for $950 from Custom Supply, INc 205.252.0141 tonight, Apr 11 07.
Having played with the DV Canon GL and XLs, I’m totally thrilled with this camera. You MUST read the manual, as it is not out of the box intuitive. Complaints have been that you can’t lock exposure, but you can. You set shutter (TV) to 60, and then you can press the func button while shooting to lock the exposure as 1 or -1, what have you.
I’m still figuring out the final cut pro workflow. My only capture preset is HDV, which is kind of lame given I shot 24P. It captures as 60i. Ugh. Just when I figured out DV, I gotta hunt for answers for HDV.
All said, give Custom Supply a call. They are legit, and they filled my order fast. Best, Anthony - Barrio Boys dot com
To extract the 24p in FCP from HDV, the easiest (but time consuming) way to do it is to use the Apple intermediate codec, and then use Cinema Tools to extract the 24p from the 60i. There’s no one-stop way to do it (yet).
I understand that it can also be accomplished in Adobe After Effects. Drop your HV20 24p clip into AE, select Interpret footage > 3:2 Pulldown, then select the appropriate pixel aspect ratio and hit OK.

pulldown removal to get 24P in Canon hV20 is a pain the butt as of yet. Hopefully Canon will address that in its firmware update (if there is one). Lots of people are not happy.
I too am having trouble with pulldown removal. I have a PC running Windows XP. I captured my HV20 footage (recorded in Cine Mode HDV24FP) using Premiere Elements 3.0. It captured saved a file with a .mpeg extension. I then imported that clip into the project (in Premiere). When I right clicked on that imported clip, there’s a menu item that says ‘Interpret Frames’. When I chose this menu, there are a bunch of settings I can customize. One of them is ‘Pulldown Removal’. BUT, I can not select this as it’s grayed out.
So I thought of using the same ‘Interpret Frames’ option in After Effects. I opened After Effects and tried to import the .mpeg clip that Premiere Elements just created. It threw the following error and rejected to load my file:
After Effects Error: an unspecified AVI or DirectShow error occurred. (1)
(53 :: 33)
I don’t know what to do now. Premiere gives a grayed out ‘Pulldown Removal’ option and AfterEffects doesn’t import a file created by Premiere. Can anybody help?
Thank you.
This little camera is great. Unfortunately the week after I bought mine it went on sale everywhere. It was at least $50 less than what I paid. Oh well, I still have no regrets. To see some footage from my camera visit http://www.canonhv20.com
How do I capture the Canon HV20 footage into final cut pro 5.1.4 ? I’m having problems…It captures fine in imovie…
We are trying to track down a definitive answer on this. Unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be a lot of clarity at the moment.
If the iMovie captures look fine, they CAN be used in FCP.
“Open iMovie HD
Create a new “My Great Movie” in 1080i
Capture the footage
Save, quit
Right click the recently captured “My Great Movie”
Goto “Show Package Contents”
Drag out the “Media” folder that contains every HDV clip in Apple’s intermediate codec.”
