Outside Hollywood offers insightful commentary on the the somewhat uncertain future of Shake, Apple’s high-end compositing and production application.
The genesis of this discussion was Apple’s decision to slash Shake pricing from $2500 per seat to $499, a move that caught basically everyone by suprise. The announcement has delighted countless independent filmmakers, as you can imagine.

I’m not convinced this is the end - the original message from Apple forwarded onto the discussion lists and web sites even makes reference to the “next generation of Shake…”
While I can understand the scepticism of the Outside Hollywood post and Isaac is drawing on past experience, we could also point to DVD Studio Pro as an example of an application Apple acquired and then rebuilt with a different code base.
I also think the post is a little off in terms of how it characterises FCP and is somewhat skewed in its references to other Apple applications. The recent “Avid versus Final Cut - 2006″ specifically addresses production workflow and I simply don’t understand why Garageband, which is a consumer application is being compared to Pro Tools!
Good points, Jonathan. And yes, comparing Garageband vs ProTools is a bit like comparing a Yugo and a Audi TT. Does not compute…
