Camcorderinfo does excellent camcorder reviews. Here’s one they did of the Sony DCR-SR100, a new hard-drive based camcorder from Sony that records MPEG-2 and Dolby Digital streams to a 30GB hard disk. The camcorder can record over 7 hours of 9Mbps MPEG-2 video (and up to 20 hours at a lower bitrate). It can also snap decent 2016 x 1512 stills. One thing that is NOT clear in the review is what resolution it records to. I have read on other sites that it is a standard-def camera. Sony says the “Video Actual” resolution is 2048K pixels. Anyone know for sure?
The Camcorderinfo reviewer seems to like the SR100:
“A pattern is emerging. JVC puts a product out on the market, one that everyone wants. The hot new thing. Then Sony, seizing on the opportunity, leapfrogs over JVC with a slightly better version, and takes home the spoils. It happened with high definition, and it’s happening again now. Two years ago JVC unveiled their hard disk drive (HDD) Everio series. This January Sony introduced the DCR-SR100. And we have give them credit; this is a solid camcorder, and unquestionably better than the JVC competitors.”
At a minute 1 lb 5 oz it’s just the sort of thing that would be easy to tote on a vacation. But it’s not cheap, at $1100 bux.
