This is a seriously cool product from Bella. It’s a $300 device that piggybacks with any old iPod or external hard drive and allows you to record DV/HDV footage from camcorders via firewire.

“Catapult is the world’s first device to allow capture of video footage from DV or HDV video cameras directly to iPods or virtually any USB drive, and begin editing immediately. A battery powered device not much larger than a Blackberry, the Catapult eliminates the time consuming and tedious task of digitizing video footage.”

Time-lapse, remote switch, and motion detection recording will be supported. And pre-record/post-record intervals are configurable, so you can choose to automatically capture the seconds preceding you hitting the record button, and a preset time after you stop it. Very nice.

The device works with both Windows and Mac systems, and will be available “the second half of 2006″.

I wouldn’t use the iPod as the HD….I’ve found them to be extremely unreiable

I have found them to be very robust. I had a 1st gen 5gb ipod that i dropped twice onto the ground while biking (at speed) and it continued to work fine, until it was stolen. I have a 3rd gen, mini and nano, all work great despite my abuse. rick

I really don’t understand why Bella is marketing this as an I-pod accessory (bad marketing tool on their part since they have only been in the business of making video production keyboards). It is, for all intents and purposes a DTE (direct to edit) device much like the Focus Enchancement devices (FS-3, FS-4, etc.). Congratualtions goes out to them! They are one of the few companies to attempt this. You see, Focus had this (DTE) market cornered with their device(s) (and were charging anywhere from $650-$1700). I’m a videographer and for the $300 price tag (which is less than HALF the amount of Focus’ lowest device the FS-4), I’ll pick one up. However, trying to sell this as an Ipod accessory might prove to be their downfall (especially if it is BUGGED). NOTE TO BELLA: Make sure it works or your Customer Service Department will get destroyed with emails, phone calls and horrible posts/reviews on websites by rabid Ipod users. This could have a lasting affect on your company (and possibly keyboard sales)!

The last time I spoke with Bella about this (about 4 months ago) it sounded like they had hit some major engineering issues and were either having to start over from the beginning or perhaps scrap the project entirely. I had high hopes we’d see this around fall of last year, and now I wonder if we’ll see it at all!
