Details and pics of the new Dell 30″ display

Found a bunch of hi-res pics and a few details on the new monitor over at the VideoUniversity Community Forums. The poster is a PC guy, and it seems he’s having issues using the monitor with a non-DVI Dual-Link video card.

To sum up:
*fit and finish is much better than the old 24″
*Requires a DVI Dual-Link supported video card to run the native 2560×1600, otherwise it is only allowing 800×600 at 4-bit color on the PC. Yuck.
EDIT: Mike Curtis has informed me that on a Mac, you get half res if on single-link DVI.
*No additional inputs, which means no PIP options.
*No GUI, which means no color or contrast controls. The only controls on the monitor are brightness and power buttons.
*Included software allows you to change the function of the power button on the display, and modify brightness. Nothing more (so that’s just about worthless).
*Sees no dead pixels (and trust me, if there were any, Glen would catch them).

Here’s my opinion (since I know you are dying to hear it). This display is crippled without software to control the color. Consider that Apple Cinema displays have no real external or GUI controls…but Mac OS X includes a powerful calibration wizard that allows you to create and easily switch between color profiles. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think that there is such a tool freely available for Windows XP. The word on the street is that Vista will include better calibration tools, but that’s still on the horizon. What commercial options are there for monitor calibration on Win32 platforms?

Who says you can’t use the Dell 30″ with OS X?

    Nobody. Who’s asking?

To reiterate what was alread stated plainly in the post, the Dell 30″ LCD requires a dual-link dvi capable card to drive the display at full resolution. If you only have a single-link dvi card (like most of us), then you only get half the display’s resolution.

Commercial monitor calibration on Windows can be done with the Eye-One Display 2.

Even using calibration tools like Eye-one or a Spyder is not great on this monitor, because you can’t adjust the contrast/color/brightness. The brightness controls on the front of the monitor are actually just the backlighting controls.

I happily use the Dell 30 inch monitor. Its controls communicate with the PC through the usb which is plugged into the monitor. A driver does HAVE to be loaded on windows xp for everything to work properly . You MUST have driver AND usb connected to be able to have full control of monitor. From manual:”OSD generate from PC application F/W through the upstream port of USB to make sure the USB cable connect well.” The Chinese that wrote the manual writes English a little poorly—I can’t write anything in Chinese so I can’t criticise manual writer’s use of written English. We have perfectly adjusted Wacom 21inch centiq exactly matching the Dell 30 inch monitor. The Dell can be adjusted to be absolutely perfect. For some reason I HAD to adjust the monitor while at FULL resolution to get settings perfect. I love the monitor!!
I have no idea of how well the driver works on a MAC system and whether the usb communicates properly with the MAC to have the control to make adjustments perfect.
If you can’t afford a premium duel-link (not to be confused with dual monitor)display card you have wasted your money on either PC or MAC.
