Little Frog in HiDef has posted a few quick tips for FCP editors. Spindownfix is a utility that turns off the powersaving sleep mode for internal hard drives, and FCP Rescue is an invaluable tool for backing up and restoring preference settings. If you haven’t already looked into these utilities, you ought to now.

How is Spindownfix any different that going to Preferences-Energy Saver and unchecking the box “Put Hard Drives to Sleep when Possible.” I’ve always refreained from unchecking this because I figured it was a good thing to help save my drives.

The FCP Rescue site appears to be down. I’ve actually never understood how to properly use the program so I just haven’t. Seems like it would be a great program if I understood it.

    Also look for it here:

It is really simple. If you have a lot of custom settings, click BACKUP and it will back them up. If things start to go awry, then launch the application and hit TRASH, it will tos the bad prefs and re-load the backup set you created.

    Saved my butt a lot.

And that PUT HARD DRIVES TO SLEEP only really pertains to the system drive. SPINDOWNFIX goes into the UNIX code and tells it not to spin them down.
