Sonic Solutions has founded the High Definition Authoring Alliance, along with 25 other member companies. That’s HDAA for all you acronym junkies.
The new alliance is supposed to help production and duplication facilities ease the transition to HD content and media delivery…and of course, alliance members will have early access to Sonic’s forthcoming high definition authoring and creation products.

The HD stone just keeps on gathering speed…

DVD-Recordable.org is reporting on the new content security scheme that is planned for high definition content on Blu-Ray and HD-DVD media.

The article states:
“…the copy protection scheme requires the use of a unique ID code for each disk. Both a Reneweal Key Block (RKB) and a Disc ID unique to the disc are written in the ROM area of the disc. Each legal recorder or player will have a device key, which differs depending on the manufacturer or the machine. An encryption key will be generated by combining the device key and the RKB. This will help the exclusion of illegal devices (System Renewability) and the prevention of illegal copying.

Therefore, illegal devices can be excluded by updating the RKB information, provided by the HD technology authorities (AACS). The RKB information will be stored in the player’s ROM and will be possibly upgradable through the internet.”

To me, this means that Someone Else potentially controls what particular devices that I play my content on. If it works as advertised, this could be a boon for content providers. But historically, those determined to bypass copy protection technologies have always been able to find a way. Does the term DeCSS ring a bell?
Would anyone like to start a pool and bet on how soon crackers circumvent this new content protection scheme?

Supports “…the ability to natively edit in high-definition video when working with HDV cameras from Sony or JVC….without any additional hardware investment.”
